In 1933, the Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory was created by 3 men, based in Japan. Today it’s better known as Canon which has grown to become one of the largest electronic suppliers in the world. They are particularly renowned for their digital cameras, producing high quality items at affordable prices. Building this empire however was not easy….
Historically, Germany had led the way in camera manufacturing but the cost of buying one was extortionate. Goro Yoshida along with two other men decided to try and develop a 35mm rangefinder camera at an affordable price. This phantom prototype camera was called ‘Kwanon’.
One of the main problems facing the men was that they did not have a lens of their own. The decision was made to join the founder member of Nikon, Nippon Kogaku Kogyo who was producing lenses. By 1936, the team had created their first commercial camera, known as the ‘Hansa Canon’. The result was an instant success but further challenges awaited them with the start of the war.
Once the war was over, the business had another dilemma. The lens, the camera and the company each had a different name so on 15th September 1947, the name Canon was taken to bring everything under one roof. From that moment on, the company started to slowly increase in size with some notable inventions such as the Serenar 50mm f/1.8 lens in 1951, the Canonet in 1961, the AF35M in 1979 and the EOS 650 in 1987.
The very first Canon digital camera was the PowerShot 600 in 1996. Next, after there were various improvements in digital technology, Canon released the EOS D2000 digital SLR camera in 1998, for expert photographers. Additionally, the XL1 digital video camera was launched. Because of its exceptional performance not to mention reliability, the XL1 grew to become the official digital video camcorder of N.A.S.A.
Canon continued to produce cameras that gave exceptional performance, incorporated impressive functionality but were still affordable including the EOS D60 in 2002 and the EOS 10D in 2003. These particular cameras made Canon number 1 in digital technology. Another success came in 2003 with the launch of the EOS Kiss Digital.
More recently, Canon has produced several digital camcorders too. In 2002 came the FV30 and the FV200KIT followed by the FV M1 and the IXY DV M2 in 2003. What Canon has managed to achieve is unusual. Not only are they the number one choice of professionals but because of their quest to create superior quality at affordable prices, consumers everywhere choose Canon also.
